The leaf-nosed lizard is one of several agamid lizards found only in Sri Lanka. Agamids are also known as dragon lizards, which feels far too cool a detail to quietly leave out.

In Sri Lanka’s 2012 National Red List, it was listed as Critically Endangered nationally, and receives strict legal protection under Sri Lanka's Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (FFPO), making any capture, possession or export unlawful without high-level authorisation.
Habitat modification is part of the challenge. Much of its habitat has been cleared for illegal logging and cardamom, coffee, tea and rubber plantations. When forests are thinned, opened, dried or simplified, what disappears is not just scenery. It is the small atmospheric stability on which creatures like this depend. The problem may not always announce itself dramatically. No trumpet sounds when humidity drops below what a species can use. No headline appears when a perch is gone, the leaf litter thins and a once-viable patch becomes just a little too exposed. But small losses add up, and for a species this fussy about conditions, “slightly worse” can become unliveable.
There is another pressure too: rarity has market value.
The same bizarre beauty that makes this lizard unforgettable can also attract the wrong sort of attention. Conservation planning in Sri Lanka has linked the species to pet-trade concern, and international trade-monitoring systems have repeatedly warned that unusual reptiles can be pulled into commerce through opaque or dubious pathways. Some humans do have a slightly unfortunate habit of meeting wonder and immediately wondering whether it comes in a box, preferably with overnight shipping.
Maybe the better idea to let travel is a simpler one.
Wild uniqueness is not a collectible trait. It is not interior décor for a terrarium with LED lighting and an expensive humidity gauge. A leaf-nosed lizard belongs, as all its biology insists, in a living forest where the moss is real and the weather is not programmable.
Still, this is not a despair story.
What is hopeful here is that the forces involved in trying to protect such species are real, even if they are less photogenic than the species themselves.
