The Owl That Knows More About Hiding Than We Do

Even its call is understated: a low, rhythmic poo-oo that repeats at steady intervals, soft enough to sound far away even when the bird is sitting only a few metres away in the dark. The Serendib Scops Owl was formally described by science only in 2004, after Sri Lankan ornithologist Deepal Warakagoda first identified its distinct call in 1995 and sighted the bird in 2001.
Read that again: in the 21st century, on an island famous for biodiversity, the world was still being properly introduced to a bird found nowhere else on Earth.
That is thrilling. It is also a little sobering, because this same owl is already recognised as endangered.

The Serendib Scops Owl is endemic to Sri Lanka’s rain-soaked southwestern forests, especially lowland rainforest in the southwest. Its entire wild world fits within one rain-soaked corner of one island.

If that sounds like a riddle, it is. The forest has handed us a creature we can name, admire and classify, but not yet claim to fully understand. The Serendib Scops Owl depends on wet-zone rainforest, and those forests have become smaller and more fragmented over time. When habitat is reduced, the issue is not only the number of trees left standing. It is also what the remaining forest is actually like for an owl trying to live in it.
